Midwifery in Senegal

Africa, blogs and such

For Christmas this year my dear friend Sarah created this blog for my business. I am extremely thankful that she took the plunge for me and finally got me on-line. The problem is that she started it and now I must figure it all out. It has been looming over me as a very important to do project, but one that I have been afraid to tackle.
So today I have decided to post something and see what happens!
At the end of January I traveled to Kafountine Senegal on the west coast of Africa. I went there to volunteer at a birth center and to receive more training. I am so glad I did. The experience was life altering. I worked 6 days a week, sometimes 30+ hours shifts in a run down concrete building which served as the only Maternite in a 2+ hour radius,by car that is which no families actually had. Some mothers had to walk through the night to get to the clinic as they could not all afford the cab fair. For those lucky enough to live near-by they could come for prenatal, birth, and postpartum care for around $20.
Although the clinic was sadly under-supplied it provided a fairly high standard of care. The ladies on my trip donated some 300+ pounds of medical supplies which were put to use immediately not only in the birth center but also the general medical clinic. Items like lidocain, gloves, and soap were next to gold in that clinic.
My experiences were so varied that I could write a book but this is a blog. So for now I will simply post this as part one of Africa and hopefully get back to this soon.
Peace to you all.
